Two public hospitals passed the fourth and final stage of the Performance Governance System (PGS) and were conferred the Gold Trailblazer Award, the highest PGS recognition from the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA).

Bataan General Hospital and Medical Center and Philippine Children’s Medical Center received their awards during a public revalida at the ISA’s Public Governance Forum (PGF).

“May the path that we took and the gains that we achieved inspire more public servants that through this journey, more lives were served, resources were efficiently managed, and health care workers become better health care providers,” said Dr. Glory Baltazar, BGHMC Medical Center chief, in her acceptance speech.

Dr. Sonia Gonzales, the PCMC executive director, said reaching institutionalization of the PGS is the affirmation of their work.

“We do not own PCMC, but we are the appointed stewards, responsible for its success through good governance,” Gonzales said.

Both hospital heads showcased their institution’s milestones and stories of transformation before a panel of experts that validated their achievements.

Among the notable improvements from the BGHMC are its 1,400 workforce, the “5Ms formula” of the transformation journey, and its research in the 2021 Philippine National Health Research System under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Apart from being the legal agency for the Childhood Leukemia Medical Access Program, the major breakthrough of the PCMC was the 70% overall five-year survival rate of leukemia patients, surpassing the WHO standard rate of at least 60% for countries like the Philippines.

Other organizations that have received the Gold Trailblazer Award are the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, the Social Security System, and the Bicol Medical Center.

The Conner District Hospital, Don Emilio del Valle Memorial Hospital, Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center, and Talavera General Hospital received the Silver Trailblazer Award, the second-highest PGS recognition. Angeline Narnola
