The Senate approved on third and final reading a bill delaying the 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) for a year.

Seventeen senators supported Senate Bill (SB) 1306. Only opposition senators Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and Risa Hontiveros voted against it.

Pimentel said the reasons of proponents of the measure to postpone the 2022 barangay elections “are not sufficient and are not good reasons.”

SB 1306 aims to reschedule the date of the 2022 BSKE to the second Monday of December 2023.

Meanwhile, Hontiveros proposed changing the date of the election under SB 1306 from December 2023 to May 2023.

However, Senator Imee Marcos, the chairperson of the Senate electoral reforms and people’s participation committee rejected the proposal. But Marcos assured Hontiveros that her proposal would be raised before the bicameral conference committee.
