Taguig City on Friday held graduation rites with robots attending on behalf of the students, to comply with coronavirus disease (Covid-19) health protocols.

The “10th Commencement Exercises (Cyber-Graduation)” was held at the Senator Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School, with 179 public high school students from Batch 2020 in attendance online.

As the students’ names were called and flashed on the LED screen, robots dressed in traditional togas accepted the diplomas, while the students’ live face videos were shown on the robots’ heads, which were tablet devices.

Videos of the graduates’ families were also displayed on the big screen.

The entire ceremony was broadcast through Facebook Live.

The robots were made by the school’s “Taguig Robotics Team,” using recycled materials.

Officials of Taguig, the Department of Education and the high school were present.

The same robots will attend graduation rites on behalf of 17,000 other students graduating from 24 public elementary and 12 other public high schools in the city. (Jojo Mangahis)
