Manila has confirmed plans to put Sampaloc district, home to the university belt, on lockdown amid rising cases of Covid-19 infections in the city.

The confirmation came amid rumors the military would be called in this week to help enforce quarantine measures.

The Manila public information office tweeted on Sunday: “NEWS ALERT: Manila City Mayor @IskoMoreno confirms that a lockdown will be implemented in the Sampaloc area but he says authorities are still ‘planning it carefully.'”

“The schedule of the lockdown is yet to be announced,” it added.

Manila also reported 13 new cases of Covid-19 infections on Sunday, bringing the total to 445. There were 680 “suspect” cases. Forty-eight people have died while 57 have recovered.

Sampaloc recorded the highest number of cases at 98, and 158 “suspect” cases. (PressONE.ph)
