A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook La Union province and the rest of the Ilocos Region (Region 1) Thursday afternoon.

The quake struck at 1:17 p.m., 17 kilometers northwest of San Fernando, La Union province, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in the Ilocos Region (Region I).

The Phivolcs said the quake struck at a depth of 57 kilometers.

Aside from San Fernando, Intensity IV  was also felt at Caba and Balaoan municipalities in La Union and in Dagupan City and Labrador and Bolinao municipalities in Pangasinan

Intensity III was recorded in Urdaneta City and Villasis, Pangasinan; Baguio City, Quezon City, Marikina City and Obando, Bulacan

Intensity II was recorded in Cainta, Rizal; San Fernando, Pampanga; Valenzuela City; Navotas City; Pasay City; Paranaque City; City of Manila and the City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan

Instrumental Intensities were felt in the following areas
Intensity III – Dagupan City
Intensity II – Vigan City; Baguio City; San Jose, Nueva Ecija
Intensity I – Cabanatuan City; Guagua, Pampanga; Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Palayan City; Baguio City; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Baler, Aurora

The Phivolcs said aftershocks are to be expected.  No damages to properties have been reported.  (Rommel F. Lopez)
