Some 30 million students will benefit with the signing of the law mandating the 20 percent student fare discount.

Republic Act 11314 covers all forms of transportation – jeep, bus, UV Express vans, taxi and TNVS, as well as air, water and rail (MRT, LRT and PNR), Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara said on Monday.

“All the student has to do is to present a valid school ID or his or her current validated enrolment forms to avail [himself or herself] of the fare discount. So now students will enjoy the same privilege granted to our senior citizens and persons with disabilities,” he said in a statement.

“This is a year-round benefit that students can avail [themselves of] so they can have discounted fares whenever they want to go home to their families, even during holidays,” he added.

The discount however excludes those enrolled in dancing or driving schools, short-term courses and post-graduate studies such as medicine, law, masters and doctorate degrees.

Students going overseas for studies will also be exempted from the P1,620 travel tax. (PressONE.ph)
