Murder convict ex-Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca may have died due to cardiac arrest, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said.
“The preliminary report of the [National Bureau of Investigation] indicates that Nuezca died of cardiac arrest,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said.
Nuezca was sentenced to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years in prison for each count of murder and was ordered to pay damages worth P952,560 after killing his two neighbors in Tarlac in December 2020.
However, he died at the New Bilibid Prison Hospital on December 1, after he was “brought unconscious” by his fellow inmates.
Meanwhile, an investigation to discover a possible foul play is ongoing, Bureau of Corrections spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said.
Nuezca was laid to rest in Pangasinan over the weekend.
Prior to his death, a Tarlac court found Nuezca guilty of murdering Sonia and Frank Anthony Gregorio after an argument over a “boga” explosion and right of way. – Ronald Espartinez
