Interior Secretary Eduardo Año on Friday told local government units (LGUs) to prohibit tricycles from traversing national highways if possible, saying the move could help prevent road accidents.
In a statement, Año said LGUs should continue road-clearing operations with wider face-to-face (F2F) classes looming.
“The road clearing ops and ‘no trike on national highway’ campaign have to be sustained. Hindi puwedeng ningas-kugon. We urge our LGUs to continue and sustain their successes to protect our children from road accidents, lalo na ngayong papalapit na ang face-to-face classes,” Año said.
Año said the no-tricycle policy should be implemented on all national highways unless otherwise allowed by an ordinance, and in the absence of alternate routes.
“Kadalasang tricycle ang sinasakyan ng mga bata sa pagpasok sa eskuwela kaya naman mahalaga na tiyaking ng mga LGUs na ligtas ang daan at sumusunod ang mga drayber sa mga limitasyon nila,” he said.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones in May said her department was expecting schools to have a full implementation of F2F classes next school year.
As of May 26, 34,238 schools have been nominated for F2F classes, of which 33,000 were public schools and 1,174 were private schools.
Public school classes for school year 2022-2023 are scheduled to begin on Aug. 22.
