The school year for basic education has been extended to July 10, 2021, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
The DepEd Order No. 012, s. 2021 amended the school calendar for 2020 – 2021 adding an “intervention and remediation week” starting March 1 to 12 “to solve learning gaps among students and also to give more time for teachers to the different learning delivery modalities.”
DepEd said the order plans to “meet the required essential learning competencies.”
“These learning gaps are attributable to reduced academic opportunities at home and substantial loss of live contact with teachers,” the DepEd said.
Starting March 1 to 12, the education department required schools to launch intervention and remediation activities based on the “unique needs of the learners as determined through the results of the different forms of assessments administered for the past two quarters.”
“These interventions and remediation activities shall be indicated in the two-week home learning plan to be prepared by the teachers, with the assistance of the assigned learning support aides (LSAs) as applicable,” it said.
An In-Service Training (INSET) will also be given to the teacher from March 15 to 19.
With these recent inclusions, the third quarter will be adjusted to March 22 to May 14, while the fourth quarter will start on May 17 to July 10.
“The additional two-week period shall be compensated by a similar adjustment in the school break between S.Y. 2020-21 and S.Y. 2021-2022,” the department added.
Also encouraged to execute the said guidelines are private schools, technical vocational institutions and higher education institutions including state and local universities and colleges offering the K to 12 Basic Education Program as part of their schools’ “philosophy, vision and mission.” Ronald dela Cruz
