Some 92,000 families in Taguig are set to benefit from cash assistance from the national government meant to cushion the economic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Over 200,000 of 270,000 families in the city belong to income brackets D and E, among sectors considered vulnerable, the city government said in a press release.

It said Taguig was among the first local government units to sign a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS), a “social amelioration program” under Republic Act No. 11469 or “Bayanihan to Heal As One Act,” signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte on March 24.

There are also programs for small businesses, displaced workers and others those who lost their source of income because of the enhanced community quarantine.

The national government will grant a P5,000 one-time, non-conditional financial assistance to formal sector workers affected by flexible work arrangements or temporary closures. Rice farmers and fishermen are also entitled to cash assistance and an interest-free loan program.

Mayor Lino Cayetano said the city’s own response to Covid-19 included monthly subsidies for heavily affected workers; relief packs for families in need; and anti-Covid-19 kits distributed to the elderly, persons with disabilities and the sickly.

The amelioration scheme, put together by the DSWD, the agriculture, trade and labor departments, and other agencies, will take effect for two months. Some 18 million families nationwide are expected to benefit.

Cayetano thanked President Duterte, lawmakers and the DSWD. “The city will continue to work in sync with the DSWD and other national agencies working to provide social services and medical support during this pandemic,” he said. (PressONE.ph)
