The US embassy in Manila confirmed that a phone call took place between Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and US President Donald Trump Sunday night.

“President Trump expressed his solidarity and offered additional assistance to the Philippines as it continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic,” the embassy said in a statement, quoting from a White House readout.

Both leaders agreed to continue working together to defeat the pandemic, save lives and restore global economic strength, the statement added.

The US president also expressed condolences for the loss of about a dozen Filipino soldiers killed while fighting Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Sulu,the embassy said.

“The two leaders also discussed how the United States and the Philippines can continue building upon the strong and enduring economic, cultural, and security ties binding the two nations,” the statement said.

There were no details on the kind of support the United States would give to the Philippines. (Melo M. Acuña)
