The UAAP is considering delaying the start of its 83rd season to as late as January 2021, league executive director Rebo Saguisag revealed Friday.

“Theoretically, Season 82 could be extended, pero aapaw na siya sa Season 83 which is unfair. Cancelling Season 82 and having a January start gives Season 83 more wiggle room to work, rather than having two missed seasons,” Saguisag said.

In an interview on 2OT, Saguisag said the league was not only monitoring the government’s general community quarantine (GCQ) measures which ban sport events, but also the players’ levels of fitness, both physical and mental.

Even if the GCQ is lifted before the scheduled September start of Season 83, Saguisag said teams still needed to hold practice, which will last one to two months. Factoring that in, a January start is logical, he said.

“They are students first before athletes. We appreciate the players and coaches’ understanding. Mental health is also part of fitness,” Saguisag said. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
