A tropical depression entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Thursday afternoon, state weather forecaster PAGASA said.

Based on its 5pm bulletin, PAGASA said the tropical depression is named Neneng. It was located 1,030 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon at 4 p.m., with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and up to 70 kph gusts, moving westward at 30 kph.

“The Tropical Depression is forecast to move generally westward or west northwestward in the next 12 hours,” PAGASA said.

The cyclone will move west southwestward to westward beginning Friday through Saturday before turning west northwestward towards Extreme Northern Luzon.

It may intensify while moving over the Philippine Sea and could reach tropical storm category on Saturday. PAGASA said a tropical storm packs 87 to 117 kph maximum wind speed.
