The construction of the Bicol International Airport is being rushed to meet its target opening within the year, the Department of Transportation said on Saturday.

The airport is 66.61 percent complete since December 2016, it said.

Construction work will be 24/7 starting this month until opening, the transport department said.

When finished, the airport can accommodate two million passengers annually and promote tourism in the Bicol region, notably Albay and neighboring areas.

The airport is being touted as the “most scenic gateway” as the “perfect cone” of the Mayon Volcano will serve as its backdrop.

A notice to proceed with construction was issued way back in 2009 but work was left uncompleted in 2012 due to problems such as right of way acquisition, arson incidents, and confiscation of equipment. Jojo Mangahis
