At least two dozen political dynasties are aiming for five to 11 seats after May 2025.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is rallying to amend the law against vote buying, noting that the illegal act is a “modern cancer of our democratic way of life.”
What makes Comelec indifferent to these possible violations of the law? “Let us respect the outcome of the elections,” says Martin Andanar. And respect vote buying as a matter of opinion and not of law?
As long as a large majority of the population remains poor, there will be vote-buying even if there are no guarantees the candidate who distributes cash will get elected. It will be a practice that will stay in this country for a long time.
