The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is proposing for the country to “safely reopen” businesses to solve the increasing unemployment rate.
“Gawa-gawa lang yang problema ng mga oligarchs. Walang kinalaman ang pagsasara ng ABS-CBN sa matinding problema dulot ng COVID. Inimbento lang ang problema na oligarchs para linlangin ang taumbayan dahil sa totoo lang, wala silang maipakitang ni katiting na magandang resulta sa pagsugpo sa lalo pang kumakalat na COVID, sa gutom at sa kawalan ng trabaho ng milyun-milyon nating mga kababayan.”
The official definition of being “employed” is actually broad. It means a person has work and has done “any work even for one hour during the reference period for pay or profit, or work without pay on the farm or business enterprise operated by a member of the same household related by blood, marriage, or adoption.”
Lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic bloated the ranks of the unemployed, with official statistics pegging the jobless rate in April 2020 at a record 17.7 percent, equivalent to 7.3 million people out of work.
