President Rodrigo Duterte is dangling a P30,000 reward to those who will report local officials pocketing money meant to assist poor families affected by quarantine restrictions.
Palace spokesman Harry Roque on Friday morning that delays in the distribution of cash aid through the government’s Social Amelioration Program were caused by quarantine measures and other guidelines.
The government has so far spent P258 billion out of P352 billion released for the Covid-19 response, mostly on emergency subsidies to poor and low-income households and displaced workers, the Department of Finance said on Tuesday.
The Duterte government is looking for new funding sources to help middle-class families during the pandemic after a provincial governor said assistance should be extended beyond the poorest of the poor.
