San Miguel Corp. (SMC) announced Monday plans to install the country’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on Skyway Stage 3.

In a statement, SMC said that the BRT system would have buses that function like trains, carry a large number of passengers, and stop only at designated stations at set intervals.

“As early as 2017, we had already been considering the bus rapid transit system on the Skyway as a means to further decongest traffic in Metro Manila and transform the commuting experience of many Filipinos,” SMC President Ramon Ang said.

The Skyway Stage 3 was formally opened to the public on Jan. 14.

The proposed BRT system will run from Susanna Heights in Muntinlupa to Balintawak in Quezon City.

The project will be presented to the Department of Transportation once ready.

Last week, Skyway Stage 3’s Nagtahan exit ramps were opened to motorists, further cutting travel time to Sta. Mesa and surrounding areas in Manila.

The expressway has yet to collect toll since it opened and Ang said that it would continue to be free of charge.

“Hindi naman kami nagmamadali. Hangga’t kaya namin, kargahin po namin ‘yun,” he said. Charlene Grace Lao
