Several senators have filed separate resolutions seeking to honor Hidalyn Diaz in light of her Olympic gold win.

Besides honoring the win, the senators also commended Diaz for “inspiring all of us,” “bringing honor and pride,” for “[her] determination in the face of personal adversity,” and for “breaking the glass ceiling for female athletes.”

“Marapat lamang na tayo sa Senado ay kilalanin ang tagumpay na ito ng isang proud Pinay na si Hidilyn Diaz,” Senator Lito Lapid said.

(It is only fair for us in the Senate to acknowledge this feat of a proud Pinay, that is Hidilyn Diaz.)

For her part, Senator Risa Hontiveros said “We can now tell our little girls —pwede kang mangarap. Posible ang gold medal.”

(We can now tell our little girls —you can dream. A gold medal is possible.)

Senator Joel Villanueva, meanwhile, encouraged fellow senators to consider the possibility of passing a sports endowment fund for Filipino Olympians.

As of today, Diaz is entitled to a P10 million cash prize from the national government as provided by law. The private sector has also pledged a total of P30.5 million, and non-cash incentives that include three free properties, lifetime free gas, lifetime free flights, and a minivan. Dunston Chi Esquivel
