Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian wants President Rodrigo Duterte to certify as urgent his “proof-of-parking-space” bill to help ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
Senate Bill 368, or the Proof-of-Parking Space Act, seeks to require vehicle owners to present proof that they have a parking space for the new vehicle they want to buy.
“Passing this bill will be a big boost to the administration’s campaign of reclaiming public roads and help ease the perennial traffic woes we are experiencing in Metro Manila,” Gatchalian said.
Under the Proof-of-Parking Space Act, individuals and businesses in Metro Manila will only be allowed to purchase vehicles after the execution of an affidavit confirming that they have acquired, either through purchase or lease, a parking space for the vehicle.
The Land Transportation Office, the Metro Manila Development Authority, and local government units must do ocular inspections to remove illegally parked vehicles and punish vehicle owners who refuse to comply.
Records from the Land Transportation Office showed that there were 11.6 million motor vehicles in 2018, an increase of almost 1.2 million or 11.4 percent from 10.5 million in 2017. (PressONE.ph)
