Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Thursday said she would continue discerning her future political move after she was endorsed by opposition group 1Sambayan as its presidential candidate for the 2022 elections.
While the vice president was thankful for 1Sambayan’s nomination, she said the decision to run must come from within herself.
“Ang desisyon sa pagtakbo, hindi pwedeng nakabase sa ambisyon, o sa pag-udyok ng iba. Sa loob ito dapat manggaling, dala ng pagharap sa lahat ng konsiderasyon at malalim na pagsuri sa situwasyon,” she said in a statement.
Retired Supreme court associate justice Antonio Carpio, 1Sambayan convenor, said the coalition wanted a candidate who had integrity, competence, track record, patriotism, vision for the country, and winnability.
“We have chosen VP Leni based on this criteria. We therefore ask VP Leni to accept our endorsement, to lead the Filipino people in these difficult times in our history,” he said.
“We hope that she will accept our challenge. She is willing to save the country from plunder, from the dictatorship, she is willing to accept the challenge,” he added.
Robredo said she would prayerfully tread the next few days to ponder on her 2022 plans.
“Sa mga susunod na araw, samahan ninyo akong magdasal pa, that our decision will be what is best for our country,” she said.
A recent Pulse Asia survey had Robredo figuring sixth among Filipinos’ top presidential picks for 2022. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
