Pope Francis named Cardinal Jose Advincula as the new Manila archbishop on March 25, 2021.
Advincula will be the 33rd archbishop of Manila, succeeding Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle who has been the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples since February 2020.
The appointment was made public in Rome, Italy at 12 PM or 7 PM Philippine time.
Advincula was ordained a priest for the Capiz archdiocese in 1976 and became Capiz’s first cardinal in November 2020.
The 68-year-old cardinal studied psychology at the De La Salle University in Manila and then canon law at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He earned a licentiate in canon law at the Angelicum in Rome.
Advincula also worked as spiritual director of the St. Pius X Seminary, where he was dean of Studies.
