The Philippines’ caseload for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) leaped to 427,797 after the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Saturday 1,893 new infections with 11 Covid-19 laboratories failing to submit their daily reports on time.

Majority of the new infections came from Davao City with 200 cases; followed by Negros Occidental with 123; Western Samar with 84; Pampanga with 60; and Quezon City with 57.

Currently, 31,402 active Covid-19 cases are undergoing treatment or quarantine: 84.6 percent are mild, 8.4 percent are asymptomatic, 2.3 percent are severe, and 4.4 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate increased to 388,062 with 474 more patients winning the fight against the respiratory illness.

Death toll stands at 8,333 with 79 new fatalities.

The Health Department mentioned that 14 duplicate cases were removed from the nationwide tally.

“Of these, 10 recovered cases and a death have been removed. Moreover, 18 cases previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as deaths,” the DOH said.

The Philippines ranks 3rd in Asia for the most number of new Covid-19 infections. Georgia tops the Asian ranking for most number of new infections at 4,472, trailed by Pakistan with 3,045 new cases. RJ Espartinez
