The Philippines reported a new record-high 28,707 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) infections, Sunday, pushing the nationwide tally to 2,965,447.

Amid the surge, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that all Covid-19 laboratories were functional on January 7, but 14 laboratories failed to submit their reports on time.

Currently, there are 128,114 active Covid-19 infections undergoing medical treatment and quarantine: 4,213 are asymptomatic; 119,276 are mild; 1,465 are severe; and 309 are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate increased to 2,785,183 with 2,579 more patients winning the fight against the deadly respiratory illness.

Death toll, on the other hand, rose to 52,150 with 15 new fatalities. 

The DOH confirmed that 135 duplicate cases were removed from the total count, while three infections previously declared as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after validation. Ronald Espartinez
