The Philippines has set a new record for the highest number of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections in a day at 6,352, raising the nationwide tally to 112,593, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed Tuesday. 

This marks the first-ever scenario where the country posted new cases beyond 6,000.

The top five areas in the country with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases are Metro Manila with 3,139, Laguna with 592, Cavite with 550, Rizal with 277, and Cebu with 261.

The DOH clarified that 3,941 of the new cases were between July 22 to August 4; 2,321 fell ill between July 1 and 21; while 69 got the virus in June; and the remaining 21 got sick from March to May.

Currently, there are 44,429 active Covid-19 cases undergoing medical treatment or quarantine: 91.2 percent are mild, 7.5 percent are asymptomatic, 0.8 percent are severe, and 0.6 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate rose to 66,049 after the DOH posted an impressive 240 more patients winning the fight against the respiratory illness. 

Death toll, on the other hand, climbed to 2,115 with 11 new fatalities.
