The government is eyeing to purchase booster shots from biotechnology company Moderna, which could be used alongside other Covid-19 vaccine brands, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said on Thursday.

“We found out that Moderna is developing a booster. ‘Yung booster na ‘yun, puwedeng gamitin kahit na Sinovac o kahit na Gamaleya ang ating nauna,” he told lawmakers at the House of Representatives.

Galvez said the government was planning to use the P5 million initially set aside for Moderna vaccines for the booster shots.

The booster shots are expected to arrive in September or October.

Meanwhile, the Moderna Covid-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in May at the earliest, according to Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Moderna vaccine was 94.1 percent effective in preventing laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 illness in people who received two doses and who had no evidence of being previously infected. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
