The Philippines reported 5,434 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections Tuesday, pushing the nationwide count to 2,861,119.

Among the said new count, the Department of Health (DOH) revealed that 5,395 of them (99%) happened within the last 14 days from December 22, 2021  to January 4, 2022.

The top areas that posted high cases in the  period were Metro Manila with 3,826 or 71%; followed by Calabarzon with 864 or 16%; and Central Luzon with 333 or 6%.

Currently, there are 29,809 active Covid-19 infections undergoing medical treatment. Among the said number, 889 are asymptomatic, 24,026 are mild, 3,020 are moderate, 1,546 are severe, and 328 are critical.

Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate climbed to 2,779,706 with 611 more patients winning the fight against the deadly respiratory illness.

Death toll, on the other hand, increased to 51,604 with 18 new fatalities. 

The health department said that it removed 13 duplicates from the nationwide count, as well as 121 negative cases. Ronald Espartinez
