The Philippines posted 119 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed cases to 4,195, according to the Department of Health (DOH) Friday.

Meanwhile, fatalities rose to 221 after the DOH announced in its daily bulletin that 18 more patients died from the infection.

The number of cases reported on Friday is relatively lower compared to previous daily reports. The highest number confirmed in a day was 538 on March 31.

In a bit of good news, recoveries climbed to 140 after the health department confirmed 16 new patients who successfully recovered from the disease.

However, the DOH said it is still too early to say if the country has controlled the spread of the disease three weeks into the Luzon-wide lockdown and after other areas in the country imposed their own quarantine policies to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Mass testing for COVID-19 will only commence on April 14. (RJ Espartinez)
