President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a proclamation stating the Philippines’ official population count at 109,035,343 as of May 2020.

The Philippine population increased by 8,053,906 since it was last tallied in 2015.

The updated population count was based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in 2020.

The PSA said the number was representative of the Philippine population as of 12:01 a.m. of May 1, 2020, in the 17 administrative regions of the country, including Filipinos abroad.

Since 2015, the population grew by 1.63 percent annually, lower than in 2010 to 2015, when the population increased by 1.72 percent per year.

The latest population data was made official through Duterte’s Proclamation 1179.

Region IV-A (Calabarzon) had the biggest population among Philippine regions 16,195,042, followed by the National Capital Region with 13,484,462 and Region III (Central Luzon) with 12,422,172.

The least populated regions were the Cordillera Administrative Region with 1,797,660, Region XIII (Caraga) with 2,804,788 and Region IV-B (Mimaropa) with 3,228,558. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
