The Philippines logged 490 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, elevating the tally to 26,420, the Department of Health (DOH) announced Monday.

348 of the new cases are “fresh” or newly validated: 131 came from Metro Manila, 79 came from Region VII, while the remaining 138 cases were spread out across the country.

142 of the new cases reported late: 21 came from Metro Manila, 5 came from Region VII, while the 116 other patients came from various locations in the country.

Death toll climbed to 1,098 with 10 new patients dying from the infectious disease.

In a bit of good news, recoveries posted a new record-high of 298 new patients winning the battle against COVID-19, bringing the total number to 6,252.

This marks the 5th straight day that more than 200 new recoveries were recorded and the 4th consecutive day of double-digit new fatalities.

Singapore still holds the top spot in Southeast Asia for the most number of COVID-19 cases at 40,818. Indonesia closely behind with 39,294 cases trailed by the Philippines.  (RJ Espartinez)
