The Philippines’ posted 3,372 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infection, raising the nationwide tally to 261,216, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed Sunday.

This marks the sixth straight day where new cases posted have exceeded the 3,000 mark.

The top areas in the country with the most number of new Covid-19 cases reported for the day are Metro Manila with 1,307; followed by Cavite with 240; Laguna with 207; Negros Occidental with 199; and Bulacan with 145.

Currently, 49,277 Covid-19 active cases are undergoing medical treatment or quarantine: 87.6 percent are mild, 8.8 percent are asymptomatic, 1.4 percent are severe, and 2.2 percent are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate skyrocketed to 207,568 after the DOH announced a whopping 20,472 more patients winning the fight against the deadly respiratory illness.

The DOH used its existing time-based recoveries, which would be reported every Sunday as part of the “Oplan Recovery” effort. Under the said effort, asymptomatic and mild cases are re-tagged as recovered after completing 14 days of quarantine as long as no Covid-19-related symptoms have manifested.

The death toll is now at 4,371 with 79 new fatalities.

The Philippines sits on the 4th spot in the world for the most number of new Covid-19 cases. Mexico (5,674 cases), Russia (5,449 cases), and neighbor Indonesia (3,636 cases) completed the top 3 spots. RJ Espartinez
