The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday confirmed 1,594 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, increasing the Philippines’ tally to 72,269.

The DOH released the breakdown of the new cases today: 750 are “fresh” or newly validated while 844 are reported late.

The top five areas in the country to register high Covid-19 cases are Metro Manila with 971, Cebu with 252, Zamboanga Del Sur with 53, Negros Occidental with 35, and Rizal with 26.

Currently, there are 46,803 active cases undergoing medical treatment or under quarantine: 90.1 percent are mild, 9 percent are asymptomatic, 0.5 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate posted an impressive 343 more patients winning the fight against Covid-19, elevating the nationwide tally of survivors to 23,623. 

Death toll, on the other hand, inches to 1,843 with 6 new patients who succumbed to the respiratory illness.

The Philippines is still leading in Southeast Asia for the most number of Covid-19 active cases at 46,803 trailed by Indonesia with 37,037 active cases. 

Earlier, experts from the University of the Philippines released a projection that the country could get as high as 85,000 Covid-19 cases by the end of July. (RJ Espartinez)
