The Philippines reported 1,214 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections from May 16 to 22, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The health department added that the total infection for the week was higher by 9.9% compared to the previous week. The daily average number of cases was at 173.

There are also 14 new severe and critical infections and six new Covid-19 fatalities. Among the said deaths, three happened from May 9 to 22.

Health experts have earlier warned the public of a possible Covid-19 surge because of the transmissible Omicron subvariant BA.1, which was already found in the country on Sunday.

The country has 14 confirmed BA.2.12.1 infections so far.
