The Philippines surpassed the 85,000 mark on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) after the Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday confirmed 1,874 new infections, raising the nationwide tally to 85,486.

The Philippines beats China—the origin country of the coronavirus pandemic—for the most number of infections in the world. China posted 84,060 total Covid-19 infections versus the Philippines’ 85,486.

This marks the 15th straight day where the country posted new cases beyond the 1,300 mark. 

The top five provinces in the country with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases are Metro Manila with 728, Cebu with 325, Laguna with 130, Iloilo with 67, and Rizal with 53.

Currently, there are 56,528 active cases undergoing medical treatment or quarantine: 90.1 percent are mild, 9 percent are asymptomatic, 0.5 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate spiked to 26,996 with an impressive 388 new patients winning the fight against the respiratory illness. 

Death toll, on the other hand, inches to 1,962 with 16 new fatalities.  (RJ Espartinez)
