Philippine vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. on Monday said the government would procure this week six million doses of the single-shot Janssen vaccine by Johnson & Johnson.

“I would like to announce that this week, we will be signing another contract with Johnson & Johnson. More or less 6 million doses, one shot. Ito po, gagamitin natin ito sa January allocation natin,” Galvez said during a vaccination event in Angeles City, Pampanga.

The Philippines has so far received 3.24 million doses of the Janssen vaccine.

All of the country’s Janssen doses to date have been donations from the US government coursed through the Covax facility.

Galvez said the government was looking to procure up to 100 million more Covid-19 vaccine doses for next year.

To date, the country has received 77.4 million Covid-19 vaccine doses.

The Philippines, which has recorded nearly 2.6 million Covid-19 cases, has fully vaccinated over 21 million of its residents against the disease. John Ezekiel J. hirro
