The Philippines logged 17,220 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections Thursday, pushing the nationwide tally to 2,888,917. 

The Department of Health (DOH) said that all Covid-19 laboratories were functional since January 4, but 11 laboratories failed to submit their reports. 

Among the 17,220 new infections, 17,104 (99%) happened within December 24, 2021 to January 6, 2022.

The top regions in the country that posted the most number of cases were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 11,563 or 68% of total cases; followed by Region 4-A with 3,165 or 19%, and Region 3 with 1,126 or 7%.

Currently, there are 56,561 active Covid-19 cases undergoing treatment: 1,837 are asymptomatic, 49,988 are mild, 2,954 are moderate, 1,470 are severe, and 312 are in critical Mocondition.

Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate increased to 2,780,613 with 616 more patients winning the fight against the deadly respiratory illness.

Death toll, on the other hand, climbed to 51,743 with 81 new fatalities. 

The DOH also confirmed that it removed 46 duplicates from the nationwide count. Ronald Espartinez
