The Philippines breached the 76,000 mark on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Friday 2,103 new infections, raising the nationwide tally to 76,444.

According to the DOH, 1,029 of the new cases are “fresh” or newly validated while 1,074 are reported late.

This marks the 4th time in the past weeks where new cases crossed the 2,000 mark.

The top five areas in the country with the highest number of Covid-19 new cases are the National Capital Region with 1,272; Cebu with 291; Laguna with 107; Rizal with 83; and Cavite with 53.

Currently, there are 50,063 active Covid-19 cases undergoing medical treatment or under quarantine: 90.15 percent are mild, 8.93 percent are asymptomatic, 0.49 percent are severe, and 0.43 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate jumped to 24,502 with 144 more patients winning the fight against Covid-19. 

Meanwhile, the nationwide death toll rose to 1,879 with 15 more patients who surrendered to the deadly respiratory illness. 

The Philippines remains the leading country in Southeast Asia for the most number of “active” Covid-19 cases at 50,063. Indonesia followed behind with 36,808 active cases trailed by Singapore with 4,333 active cases.  (RJ Espartinez)
