The Philippines crossed the 80,000 mark on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Sunday 2,110 new cases, raising the nationwide tally to 80,448.

This marks the 4th consecutive day where the country posted new cases beyond the 2,000 mark.

The top five areas in the country with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases were Metro Manila with 1,345, Cebu with 304, Laguna with 109, Negros Occidental with 66, and Rizal with 40.

Currently, there are 52,406 active Covid-19 cases undergoing medical treatment or quarantine: 89.83 percent are mild, 9.25 percent are asymptomatic, 0.49 percent are severe, and 0.42 percent are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate spiked to 26,110 after the DOH posted an impressive 382 new patients winning the fight against Covid-19.

Death toll, on the other hand, jumped to 1,932 with 39 more patients who succumbed to the respiratory illness.

The Philippines still holds the top spot in Southeast Asia for the most number of Covid-19 “active” cases. Indonesia — which takes the lead for the most number of Covid-19 total cases — landed on second spot behind the Philippines with 37,342 “active” cases. (RJ Espartinez)
