The Philippines reached another milestone on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases after it breached the 70,000 mark with 1,951 new infections, elevating the nationwide tally to 70,764. 

The breakdown of the new cases, released by the Department of Health (DOH) Tuesday, are as follows: 1,348 are “fresh” or newly validated while 603 are reported late.

The top five areas in the country with the most number of Covid-19 for the day are Metro Manila with 1,464, Cebu with 90, Laguna with 74, Cavite with 53, and Rizal with 36.

Currently, there are 45,646 active Covid-19 cases undergoing medical treatment or undergoing quarantine: 91.1 percent are mild, 8 percent are asymptomatic, 0.4 percent are severe, and 0.5 percent are in critical condition.

The country’s recovery rate increased to 23,281 with 209 more patients winning the fight against Covid-19. Death toll, on the other hand, inches to 1,837 with two new fatalities.

The Philippines still holds the top spot for the most number of active Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia. Indonesia followed behind with 37,083 active cases.  (RJ Espartinez)
