The Department of Education (DepEd) reported on Monday that more than 300,000 teachers have been inoculated with Covid-19 vaccines.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that the DepEd had been encouraging teachers to avail themselves of Covid-19 vaccines in preparation for the pilot resumption of face-to-face classes.

The DepEd’s tally of vaccinated teachers excluded those from Mimaropa and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, places Briones said had no available data to date.

“Nangako ang ating Covid (task force) na by August dapat maayos na lahat. Kung hindi pa, then we will have to wait on the president’s level of satisfaction with how we are preparing. Pero iyon ang target na end of August, dapat substantial na iyong pag-vaccinate ng mga bata at sa mga teachers,” she said in a Laging Handa briefing.

Briones said the DepEd had proposed a pilot study for limited in-person classes in 100 schools in low-risk areas.

“Ang ating hinihingi, pinu-propose na ini-endorse naman ng IATF na i-pilot muna iyong face-to-face,” she said.

While Duterte has already decided to start basic education classes on Sept. 13, he has yet to decide on the resumption of limited face-to-face classes.

Just last month, Duterte stressed anew that he did not want schools to conduct face-to-face classes until the country was already free of the threat of Covid-19. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
