The Philippines, which recorded 17,220 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, is “likely” to tally 20,000 new cases on Friday, the OCTA Research Team said.

In a tweet on Thursday morning, OCTA fellow Guido David said that the “surge has not peaked yet” and numbers could climb higher in the coming days.

David also projected that Metro Manila could hit up to 11,000 new Covid-19 cases on Jan. 6. The official number released by the Department of Health later on Thursday was 11,630 new cases.

“The positivity rate in [Metro Manila] increased further to 45 percent as of Jan. 4…and the surge has not peaked yet. The country is expected to exceed 20,000 new cases by Jan. 7,” David said.

The Philippines has 56,561 active Covid-19 cases as of Jan. 6.

The country has been logging high Covid-19 cases since the holiday season despite its steadily increasing vaccination numbers.

More than 51 million Filipinos have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, while 57,328,625 have yet to complete their vaccination. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
