Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena on Saturday bagged gold in the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) games after logging a record-setting leap.
Obiena registered 5.46 meters to set a new SEA Games record, eclipsing his previous high of 5.45 meters.
He attempted to vault 5.94 meters, which would have been his new personal best but failed in three attempts.
Obiena holds the Asian pole vault record with a 5.93-meter jump at the 17th Golden Roof Challenge in Austria in September 2021.
Another Filipino, Hokett de los Santos, bagged the silver medal.
Obiena’s gold is the Philippines’ 11th in the biennial meet. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
