Former columnist and Konsensya Dabaw spokesperson Maria Victoria “Mags” Maglana presents her certificate of candidacy for the 1st congressional district of Davao City.

Former columnist and Konsensya Dabaw spokesperson Maria Victoria “Mags” Maglana is joining the race for the 1st congressional district seat of Davao City against presidential son and incumbent Rep. Paolo Duterte and businessman Jamal Kanan.

Maglana, who has more than 30 years in accompanying local government and communities through capacity building, technical support, and direct support, said she “has been involved in policy development and advocacy work to pass responsive legislation at the local, regional, and national levels.”

She said her decision to run is based on the need for the people of the first congressional district to have an active participation in local governance.  Maglana stressed that voters need to be talked to and heard by their representative and not just be approached only during elections.

She added that her motivation to seek public office is based on the need to work out legislative solutions to our country’s problem.

“Nais ko ring tumulong sa paglutas sa mga problema ng bansa na matagal nang naghihintay ng resolute at effective legislative action, kagaya ng anti-dynasty law, pagbangon mula sa pandemya, at pagtutol sa pagbabalik ng mga puwersa at pamamaraang associated with dictatorship and authoritarianism,” she said.

“Kailangan nang itapon ang lumang governance playbook ng Davao City na siyang ginamit for 35 years. Itinatali tayo nito sa mga sitwasyong ang interes ng iilan ang nangingibabaw at the expense of people’s rights and welfare and good governance,” she said. – Rommel F. Lopez
