The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday announced the nomination of Michael Braganza Peloton as its new commissioner.

Peloton, a Davaoeño, was a long-time lawyer of President Rodrigo Duterte, according to an ABS-CBN report.

Comelec chairman Sheriff Abas said Peloton was a “timely addition” to the poll body ahead of the 2022 elections.

“[H]is vast experience in the field of law and information technology in our thrust to further improve and revolutionize our electoral processes,” he said in a statement.

“[Peloton] joins Comelec at an exciting and challenging time, as we have already started preparations for the 2022 national and local elections in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. He will complement the existing members of the commission en banc as we continue to strive to fulfill Comelec’s mandate in strengthening and advancing our democracy,” he added.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Peloton’s nomination on Sept. 17. The Commission of Appointments will have to give its consent.

Peloton succeeds Luie Tito Guia who retired in February. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
