The 95th season of the oldest sports league in the Philippines, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), has been officially ended due to the rising threat of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

Francisco Cayco of Arellano University, this year’s season host, revealed that he had a discussion with the Policy Board members via teleconference and reached a final decision.

“First and foremost, what was considered was the safety of the athletes, students, fans and officials. Eligibility matters of athletes being raised shall be discussed later,” Cayco said.

This is the first time since 1962 that the NCAA is unable to reach the finish line of its season.

In 1962, the NCAA was suspended due to hooliganism and the proliferation of ineligible players.

Events that are affected by the termination include volleyball, football, lawn tennis, soft tennis, track and field, under-15 basketball, beach volleyball, and cheer dance.  (RJ Espartinez)
