Marvel Studios unveiled on Monday the first trailer for the highly anticipated “Eternals” film.
The film tells the story of an immortal and god-like team of superheroes who have been living quietly on Earth for centuries but were forced out of the shadows to fight Earth’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
“Eternals” is directed by Chloe Zhao who recently won an Oscar for her work on “Nomadland.”
“It’s been such an incredible experience working with the team at Marvel I want to be careful saying my vision, even though I do want people to know that they (Marvel) did support what I wanted to do […] But I also want to make sure they know that I got the support of this incredibly talented team,” Zhao said in an interview with “Variety” last month.
The film features a star-studded cast including Angelina Jolie (Thena), Kit Harrington (Dane Whitman), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Gemma Chan (Sersi), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), and Barry Keoghan (Druig).
The film, based on the 1976 graphic novel written by Jack Kirby, will also feature Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first openly gay superhero (Phastos) and deaf character (Makkari).
“I am more thrilled than overwhelmed about being given the opportunity to represent the deaf community. I’m very thrilled about that—just to bring in that storyline within the MCU. I think there’s plenty of room for more stories like that,” said Ridloff, who was born deaf, in an interview with “MovieWeb” last year.
“Eternals” is the third film under MCU’s “Phase 4,” preceded by Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow,” set to release on July 2021 and Simu Liu’s “Sang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” coming out this September.
