Manila Mayor Franciso “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Wednesday appealed to the national government to stop requiring the public to wear face shields.

Face shields are sheets of clear plastic that cover the full length of an individual’s face until the chin.

“Ang face shield ay dapat ipatigil nang i-require sa general population at gamitin na lamang sa ospital upang makabawas sa gastusin at intindihin ng taumbayan,” Domagoso said in a statement.

The Philippine government made mandatory the wearing of face shields nationwide in December last year, nine months since the first community quarantine was imposed in the country.

“Tayo na lang yata sa buong mundo ang nag-rerequire ng face shield sa kalsada. Dapat pag-isipan uli ito. Marami na tayong natutunan. We should adjust,” Domagoso said.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, face shields are not effective in protecting an individual from respiratory droplets.
