The five municipalities of Guimaras Province

The provincial government of Guimaras Island issued a temporary entry ban of tourists coming from China to safeguard the province from the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin approved Executive Order No. 15, obliging the five municipal mayors of the province to impose the entry ban of guests from other countries and other areas who failed to show a clearance from the Department of Health-Bureau of Quarantine (DOH-BOQ).

“While the Bureau of Quarantine remains on high alert and is in constant coordination with authorities from all ports of entry for stricter border surveillance, the province of Guimaras likewise needs to have full vigilance and security in all its entry points,” Gumarin said.

He added that as a small province with no major ports, they should still strengthen their safety measures to protect the residents and the agri-tourism industry of the province of Guimaras.

Based on data from the provincial tourism office, the province of Guimaras welcomed 582 Chinese tourists in 2019. Chinese investors are also present in the province but their numbers are not as big compared to other provinces.

Gumarin said one of the proposals discussed during the meeting organized by the DOH-Bureau of Quarantine Western Visayas was to require Filipino-Chinese residents to show a clearance that they did not travel to places with confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus.

“When they travel here they must have papers to show that they have no recent travel to China,” he added.  (RJ Espartinez)
