The government will temporarily stop the issuance of student-driver permits starting July 1, 2020.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) cited Memorandum Circular 2019-2176 titled “Rules and regulations on accreditation, supervision and control of driving institutions and on standardization of driver education” issued on December 5, 2019.

The memorandum requires that student-drivers take a “course to be conducted by LTO or its duly accredited driving school for at least fifteen (15) hours and shall be completed within two (2) years from start of the course.”

The program was originally set for adoption in April 2020 but was put on hold due to the coronavirus disease (Covid19) crisis.

The temporary suspension will be enforced from July 1, 2020 to August 3, 2020.

No date was given on when the course will be offered as the LTO is still coordinating with driving schools in the setting up of enrollment facilities for student-drivers. Jojo Mangahis
