Senator Richard J. Gordon slammed Aksyon Demokratiko presidential candidate and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso for claiming that a law he authored discriminates against motorcycle riders.

Gordon said Republic Act 11235 or the “Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act” meant to prevent the commission of crimes by motorcycle-riding suspects does not impose double metal number plates or “doble plaka”, as claimed by its critics, on every motorcycle.

“This is a misnomer because if one would carefully peruse the law’s implementing rules and regulations, it does not impose a metal number plate in the front of the motorcycle,” Gordon clarified.

Gordon called Domagoso’s criticism “fake news” meant to score voting points   among motorcycle riders.

“Let’s not poison the minds of our people with misinformation and disinformation, and use the intent of the law as a political propaganda to fuel any misplaced ire of our motorcycle riders whose safety is our paramount concern,” he added.

In an address to drivers of passenger and delivery service “Angkas” who trooped to the Manila City Hall to express their support for his presidential run, Domagoso said he personally believes the law does not make any sense.

“That’s stupidity, not just discrimination. It’s really stupidity,” Domagoso was quoted as saying.

RA 11235 was signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte in March 2019 in response to the growing number of crimes committed by so-called “riding-in-tandem”. Under its Implementing Rules and Regulations, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) shall issue to all registered motorcycles a bigger, readable and color-coded metal plate at the motorcycle’s rear and a decal plate in its front.

The old plate measured 200mm x 225mm, while the new plate will measure 235mm in width and 135mm in height.  – Rommel F. Lopez
